Asian American Youth Society (AAYS)
Program Director

AAYS is a middle school club designed to bring Asian American youths together in the common interest to unify and educate the community about the injustices and triumphs of minorities in America.

As California schools continue to cut back on after-school programs, I made time from my college career and work life to volunteer at Montera Middle School of Oakland as AAYS Program Coordinator.  Because many of the teachers are already overwhelmed by their larger than normal class sizes and other school related activities, I decided that I would use my time to give back to the community.  As a former student there, I gained valuable lessons about civic duty and gained a deeper appreciation of our civil rights.

At the beginning of 2008, I supervised and ran all of the club's activities.  We've done numerous fund raisers to help support our trips, prizes and projects.  One of our proudest community service acts was collecting clothes and blankets to donate to the victims of the SiChuan earthquake in China.

Apart from conducting the business part of the club of generating money, I also lecture on American history through literature and documentaries based on the Asian American experiences.  Important as it is to learn history, I felt the need to expose students to how their ancestors had a strong part in shaping US History.   To find out more about our activities please click the link below.

With my experience in communicating with the school administration, students, and their parents, I have developed very strong communication skills.  The greatest experience is seeing the students work together to fight against injustices and educating their peers about current and past issues.
